The first EPOS system was introduced by IBM in1986. Initially, EPOS was just a Computer and monitor display screen, then, thanks to technological advances, touch screen monitors were introduced. Barcode scanners and printers were then made to be compatible with the EPOS units, to take the check the barcode and to take the printouts of the all the bills which were made. It became a much more efficient process. There are two types of EPOS system in market nowadays namely Modular system and Integrated System. In the Integrated systems, the display and computer are attached one device, whereas in modular systems, the computer is separately connected to various peripheral devices such as printers, and the barcodes along with the display device. Multiple devices such as printers, barcode scanners, barcodes, chip and pin, tablets, mobile PDA, customer displays, cash draws and weighing scales can be attached to the integrated systems so that it can perform various other functions.

EPOS systems have innovative design in accordance to customer's needs and varying demands. In previous years, it was complicated to send data between cash registers and the manufacturers, as there were no portals which could allow precise transfer of data between different software and EPOS systems.
