15 years of Google that helped change the Internet

From a small startup to Google became only 15 years in leading companies in the world and a giant business with a turnover of 50 billion dollars. But not lost touch irreverent adolescence.

The date of the creation of search engine which takes one of the best known brands on the planet is marked today, officially marking the day when two students at Stanford University have teamed up to develop a search engine.

The project of Larry Page and Sergey Brin named BackRub and spent a year working on the servers of the university, but in 1997 was named Google, in an allusion to the word "googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by 1 followed by one hundred zeros.

The idea was associated with the desire to "organize one seemingly infinite amount of information on the Web," explains the site's service. The domain google.com was registered by September this year.

The launch of the service takes place shortly after, when the Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, passes a check for $ 100,000 to create the company Google Inc, which starts up in September 1998, in a garage. The company registration is done on 4 September and the company hires the same date your first employee, Craig Silverstein.

Indexing capability and algorithms that make its results more efficient were growing, and the design also evolved, keeping always a minimalist appearance with the domain search box, animated by famous doodles that reinvent the logo according to the ephemeris point.

In 1998 Google had a page like this:

The contrast is great with the image that takes today, where a doodle excited challenges visitors to collect the sweets to celebrate the 15th anniversary.

In May 2000 it made the launch of the first versions of the service in other languages, among which includes the Portuguese. French, German, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian and Danish were the other languages covered. It is also at this time that Google earns the first time a Webby Award (called the "Oscars of the Internet"), in the category "technical advances".

In March 2001, the service is now available in 26 languages (in February of the following year would become 72) and Eric Schmidt is named chairman of the board of the company - a position still plays and fills with the executive director.

With the success of the number of services begins to widen. In 2001 it launched Google Images, providing access to around 250 million images online.

The structure also grows, so do the number of employees, and in August of that same year opened its first office outside the U.S. in Tokyo. Currently the company has over 70 offices spread across 40 countries and Portugal also has a mark on the map.

With growth comes also a more "institutional", but Google knew growing maintaining the characteristics that gave rise to the empire. Google Labs is officially created in 2002, reserving the space for testing new technologies proposed for equipped research and giving rise to the creativity of employees, you can reserve a slice of their time to develop their own ideas.

It was in this laboratory that tested many services that are now part of the portfolio and that have been released and kept in beta for a long time, but a strategy of simplification and rationalization of resources ultimately dictate the death of the project in 2011.

For several years the new services are appearing in cascade: Gmail is launched in 2004, with iniciaolmente available by invitation only. In the same year his first social network, Orkut which was eventually eclipsed by Facebook. Later, in 2011, the company tried again to enter the social web with Google +, which is still far from the desired success.

In 2005 it is the turn of the map service Google Maps, Google Talk, intended for instant messaging, iGoogle and Google Earth.

Picasa, Google Calendar, Books and News are services that follow, but one of the big changes would come from an acquisition with the purchase of YouTube in 2006 for 1.65 million dollars. This has become one of the most requested services company, with 800 million users.

The extension to the mobile world is embodied in 2007 with Android, an open platform for mobile devices, developed with the Open Handset Alliance. The bet is to show up a hit but Google did not want to be alone by software and advanced with the purchase of Motorola in 2012.

Today the platform is used by hundreds of millions of devices, far surpassing Apple's iOS, and next month will launch a new version of the Kit Kat.

February 2008 is the release date of Google Sites and April is a new version of Google Earth integrates Street View. The controversial service is first available in Europe with pictures from France in July. In September it launched the company's browser, Chrome continues to try to dethrone Internet Explorer and Firefox.

In recent years, Google has become a machine to launch services, generating daily news in TeK but not all successes. The closure of Google Labs and some services with less success, such as Jaiku and iGoogle.

The power that takes the Internet, especially in research and online advertising have brought setbacks and processes by the U.S. authorities and European.

With a turnover of 50 billion dollars per year and 45,000 employees on the payroll Google is increasingly compared to the "Evil Empire", especially the domain of relevant areas of Internet business and the threat to privacy that results from the amount of information we will collect from users in many aspects of your digital life: search, email, maps and location, use of mobile devices, etc..

Does the path of Google in the next 15 years is no longer a company admired for spending to be seen as a threat?
